Three people have promised to dress up as snails and crawl along Ashford's shared space.

The trio say they will go ahead with the protest if 25,000 people join their group on social networking website Facebook.

The group currently has about 4,000 members.

The trio, who all work at 3 Zero, a bar in Bank Street which is part of Ashford’s shared space area, say they are even prepared to risk getting arrested in order to highlight the failings of shared space.

They also want to raise money towards a transport-related cause, a new minibus for Age Concern.

With enough support, kmfm presenter Adam Dowling, who DJs at 3 Zero on a Friday night; manager of the bar, Shaun McCleland, and DJ Adam White, will put on snail outfits and crawl from the station to the “bolt” at the ring road end of Godinton Road and back up Bank Street.

The trio have also written to Top Gear in the hope of getting coverage on the television show along with a visit from Jeremy Clarkson, who slated Ashford’s shared space scheme in The Sun newspaper last year.

Adam White said: “People don’t know what shared space is all about.

“It’s a farce as drivers don’t know where to go and definitely don’t share the space with pedestrians.”

Despite believing in the cause, not all the prospective snails are looking forward to the stunt.

Adam Dowling said: “I’m not all that keen on dressing up anyway, let alone as a snail, getting down on my hands and knees and crawling round the ring road.”

The Facebook group is called “25,000 members to crawl up shared space ring road.”
