Snowfall makes going slow

A blanket of overnight snow made it slow going for commuters trying to get to work this morning.

Residents woke up to a three-inch covering of the white stuff as the snowfall predicted by weather forecasters became a reality.

The county was badly affected, with many roads - in the north and west of the county particularly - blocked and closed.

The M20 is closed coast-bound between junctions 8 and 9, Maidstone to Ashford, and London-bound it is down to one lane.

A number of schools are closed including Egerton primary, Goldwyn at Great Chart, Willesborough junior and infants and The North. Homewood School in Tenterden was also shut.

Some parts of Kent were hit by more than 20cm overnight. Medway and Tunbridge Wells appear to be the worst hit.

In Ashford town centre around 10-15cms of snow fell. Most main roads had been gritted and a gritting lorry was working on the town centre ring road around 7.30am this morning.

In the town centre itself traffic was flowing - but slowly, with jams expected as the rush hour and school run gets under way.

There are warnings of school closures on what is the last day before schools break up for the Christmas and new year break.
