Major routes around Kent are open with the exception of the M20 - where Operation Stack is in place between junctions 8 and 9 coastbound.

According to the police, the A20 is very busy from junction 8 of the M20 (Leeds Castle) down as far as Dover.

The advice to lorry drivers not yet in Kent is to park up and wait, and listen to news broadcasts.

Overnight more than 3,500 cars have crossed the channel on ferries.

A spokesman said: "Overnight we've been working very hard with our partners to clear the queues and help people get away for Christmas. Clearly there are still delays and we thank those waiting for their patience.

"If you have a crossing booked and haven't set out yet check with your operator before leaving home", said Superintendent Andy Rabey from Kent Police.
