Paramedics were seen to join police and the fire service at the scene at 11am.

The vehicles – a white Mercedes van and an orange DAF lorry – were both severely damaged and the van driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lorry driver has been taken to the William Harvey Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road remains closed for almost nine hours to allow collision investigation work to take place, with the affected stretch finally reopening at 8.42pm.

Delays in the area were worsened by a second crash, which partially blocked Tithe Barn Lane in both directions.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) spokesperson said: “KFRS was called to assist Kent Police at 11.07am today (October 23), following a serious collision on the Great Chart Bypass, in Ashford, involving a van and a lorry
