Ashford United manager Tommy Warrilow pleased with progress club are making in Isthmian South East

By Joe Harbert

Ashford United manager Tommy Warrilow insists he is refusing to get carried away with his side’s winning form, insisting success in May remains the bigger picture.

United, who made it five successive Isthmian South East victories following Saturday’s 2-0 triumph against Faversham at Homelands, remain second in the division just four points behind pace-setters Hastings.

With just over three months of the campaign left to play, Warrilow admits he wants to keep the atmosphere around the club buzzing heading into the season’s title showdown.

“At the moment it’s all going well and the squad is getting stronger, so you can’t ask for much more at the moment apart from keeping our heads down,” the former Tonbridge Angels boss said.

“We’ve now got the biggest squad we’ve had because we had been light before, but we’ve been patient and waited for the right people to come along.

“We can still do a lot better but that’s the standards we’ve set, and now teams come here and we’re expected to win.

“It’s a long-term thing though for me and at the end of the season I want to see us at least where we were last year or even better, so I’m not going to get carried away with it.

“It only takes a few losses when it’s tight up there so I don’t want to be negative, and all the while we’re on a run I’m going to be positive and drill it into the boys, and try and keep the place buzzing too.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go unbeaten for the rest of the season as well because I think it’s a bit of a free-for-all this year – we’ve kept a clean sheet again this week and clean sheets are what win you leagues.

“My first year at Tonbridge we lost in the play-offs and then went up in the second season, so hopefully we might have the same omen this year.”

Warrilow’s side will hope to show the strides they’ve made again on Saturday when they face fellow promotion-chasers Sevenoaks Town at Homelands.

With tough trips to Cray Valley, Chichester and Hastings also to come in the next four weeks, the Ashford boss will hope to avenge his side’s 3-0 away defeat to Town back in October.

He added: “They beat us at the start of the season, but we’re going into it with confidence.

“We’ll tidy a few things up for what will be another tough game and the nice thing is we now get the rest period in between games as well.”
