Kennington manager Dan Scorer believes squad will benefit from time off over lockdown

Kennington manager Dan Scorer feels his side will benefit from their enforced break.

Ton have a 100 per cent record in SCEFL Division 1 and are through to the FA Vase second round after beating Fisher on penalties last weekend.

You might imagine they'd be desperate to keep playing but lockdown gives the squad a much-needed break.

The fresh four-week lockdown was confirmed shortly after Kennington's Vase success, with the hosts progressing 5-4 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw, to set up a second-round meeting with Glebe.

Scorer said: “It was a great result - we had to work hard for it.

“It’s the first time this season we’ve really been tested over the course of 90 minutes but we were certainly the stronger side on the day and deserved to win.

“The fact we had to dig in and finished with 10 men, not through a sending off but an injury, made it all the more satisfying.

“We then heard about the lockdown and, like last time, it’s the right decision.

“If it’s a national lockdown everyone needs to abide by the rules and stay safe. That’s the most important thing.

“It’s probably come at the right time for us because we’ve set ourselves really high standards and the boys have been excellent but you can see fatigue is starting to set in.

“We’ve got little injuries here and there and, because of the intensity we play at, that’s bound to happen.

"There’s lots of discussions about whether a short pre-season is needed but clubs should be able to put things in place and if players don’t want to keep themselves fit, that’s down to them.

“I don’t see the need to have a small pre-season and waste another two or three weeks.

“Our first game back is likely to be the second round of the Vase, which is good because it means standards have to be raised straight away.

“If we came back on a league game against a side who aren’t doing too well, some players might think they can ease their way back in."

Kennington keeper Joe Mant conceded a penalty in normal time but made amends by saving it.

He went on to keep out Fisher's second kick in the shoot-out.

Scorer said: “He was disappointed with the way he gave the penalty away - it was poor judgement - but he made a fantastic save and he made another one in the shoot-out.

“He’s been a fantastic signing since he came here in December last year.

“He’s got great experience and he’s certainly the best keeper at this level. We’re lucky to have him.

“He’s bought into everything we do and he’s playing his part in moving us forward.”

Tommy Scorer missed Kennington’s first penalty but Reiss Crimmen, Peck, Harry Lavender, Gary Lockyer and Luke Hughes booked their place in round two.

Boss Scorer said: “In that moment I felt more like a player than a manager.

“As a manager I’d like to think I’m respectful and the first thing I do is shake hands with the opposition and the officials but in the heat of the moment I ran down the other end of the pitch quicker than anyone.

“It was more because I felt we deserved it after the way we dug in and the fighting spirit we showed. I was so happy for the boys.”
