Ashford United sign 20-goal Kennington striker Gary Lockyer

Isthmian South East Ashford have signed prolific Kennington striker Gary Lockyer.

The 28-year-old forward has 20 goals to his name in as many games this season, scoring a stoppage-time penalty in Saturday’s 3-2 Southern Counties East Premier Division win at Tunbridge Wells.

He’s previously turned down offers to leave Kennington but Lockyer wants to test himself at a higher level.

Lockyer told the club website: "It's been the hardest decision I’ve had to make in my career - it wasn’t easy as I absolutely love Kennington - from Jon (Lancaster, chairman), Dan (Scorer, manager), all the boys and the supporters who have been great to me - while my boy plays for the Juniors under 7's and my daughter the Under 9's.

"I'm moving on purely for football reasons - I'm nearly 29 now and having worked hard to get myself fit a couple of seasons ago, it was one of those where if I don't take the chance to test myself at the higher level now, then perhaps I might never do it.

"When I spoke to Tommy (Warrilow) about the ambition Ashford United has this season and beyond, it ticked the boxes for me. The club's looking to kick-on and get into Step 3, and also feels like I've got some unfinished business there having played before when the club reformed in the Kent Invicta League.

"Obviously the boys have given me a bit of good-natured stick, but I'm leaving Kennington on good terms, and would like to thank everyone at the club."

Kennington manager Dan Scorer said: “Gary's been in tremendous form over the past two seasons, with 35 goals in his last 32 games for the club, which is exceptional at any level.

"He’ll be a massive loss for us, but he’s absolutely deserved his chance to go and showcase what he can do at the next level.

"It was a great way for him to sign off on Saturday, and I know he enjoyed it as much I did.

"We won’t panic and rush to bring someone in, as we have great depth within the squad, which will provide one or two opportunities for others to step up, and I think we could really see a number of players grow in the coming weeks.

"I wish Gary the very best at Ashford and I hope he hits the ground running - and hopefully it's not the last time we will have seen him in a Ton shirt, either."

Kennington sit eighth in the Southern Counties East Premier Division after their win at Tunbridge Wells. Ashford are third in Isthmian South East - three points behind leaders Cray Valley - following a 4-0 win over Hythe on Saturday.
