Ashford United boss Gary Alexander wants to sign a striker

Ashford United want to sign a striker in time for their season-opening derby against Hythe next weekend.

Manager Gary Alexander this week brought former Ebbsfleet winger Lanre Azeez to the club.

And he's hoping to do more business by the time Bostik South East kicks off on August 11.

"I've still got a bit of work to do," Alexander admitted. "I feel we need a little bit more firepower up top and I'm working on a few things.

"It's tough. I'm not saying I haven't got quality in the squad but we need a little bit more.

"Strikers are gold dust, aren't they? They're hard to come by but here's hoping one does pop up who can add competition and make us stronger.

"You'll see players changing clubs in the coming weeks because they haven't quite produced over pre-season.

"There will be changes and you never know. We're always looking to improve and, as a club, Ashford want to improve.

"We'll always be on the lookout for the right person at the right price."

Work and family commitments mean Azeez won't be involved in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Folkestone at Homelands.

Alexander said: "We know what he's about and he'll add quality to our squad.

"We make lists of players as we go and he's one who caught the eye.

"He's got good ability and he's capable of playing higher. For whatever reason, he hasn't but we're lucky enough to have him on board."
