Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby opens up about depression and urges others to seek help

The Archbishop of Canterbury has opened up about his recent experience of depression - as he urges others to seek help.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day this morning, Justin Welby said he was inspired to speak out following this month's Mental Health Awareness Week.

He said: "I was struck by the fact that people from all over the world and from all walks of life spoke on social media about their experience of mental illness.

"We often think it's just us who are struggling, that everyone else is doing okay."

He added that being a Christian doesn't mean "everything's okay forever".

"Last year, I realised I was depressed," he said.

"I have a daughter who's been very open about her experiences with depression, and she helped me see that it's not something to be ashamed of. It's just life. And I got help."

'You are not alone. You are truly valued, and deeply loved' - Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

Speaking ahead of today's mental health conference at Lambeth Palace, which will look at ways the Church can help tackle the issue, the Archbishop urged others to speak out and seek help.

"We don't talk about our mental health," he said.

"The stigma is still there, so we feel more alone than we need to. Others still face that stigma and loneliness.

"It is my prayer today that anyone who is walking in darkness knows this: You are not alone. You are truly valued, and deeply loved.

"Reaching out and talking to someone can be the first step back into the light."
