Bob's squeaky shoes are no more! Read his blog

My shoes have been the subject of some debate recently on-air ever since I mentioned the squeak.

It appears I'm not the only one who has an exceptionally noisy pair of shoes.

But first things first, I'll explain my predicament to those of you who have missed my breakfast show on kmfm.

I bought a perfectly respectable pair of Doc Marten's and for a few weeks they were fine, I wandered over hill and dale, highway and by-way with no problem, then one day for no reason the squeak appeared in the right shoe, followed a day or so later by the left.

Quietly at first so it was only me that noticed but in the days that followed the squeak turned into a wall of sound.

People started to take notice, looking down at my feet and walking away grinning.

The only course of action was to ask the listeners for help.

"Drill a hole and pour oil in," suggested one.

"Remove the insole and see if that makes a difference," said another.

It didn't.

"Try throwing them away," said another helpfully.

"Play Soul Man, it won't fix the squeak but might make you feel better."

"If the boot was on the other foot . . . . . " etc. etc.

On second thoughts maybe next time I've got a problem with something I'll avoid asking the listeners for a solution.

Anyway, the other day by chance I came up with the answer.

I wandered into Canterbury on Sunday, primarily to watch the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders receive the Freedom of the City, when I walked past a shoe shop and saw the pair of shoes I had been after for a while but could never afford reduced by £35.

So I bought them and that was that, problem solved.

I've since donated the old squeaky pair to Oxfam who send them off to the needy in foreign climes.

So if you're on holiday and somebody approaches you wearing squeaky shoes and they're a pair of brown DM's, size nine they might just be mine.

I paid Stan the Man a visit last Friday when he switched on his Christmas lights in South Street, Canterbury.

He's been doing it now for about seven years and this year has really excelled himself, extending the display to the back garden and filling it with a herd of nodding reindeer.

If you get a chance please pay him a visit. He does it in memory of his late wife and many charities have benefited through his efforts - this year it's the Pilgrims Hospices.

His winter wonderland is open for everyone to walk around from dusk onwards and there is even a flurry of the white stuff from time to time as well.

Have a good week.

You can hear Bob weekdays from 7am-11am on 106fm
