Canterbury: Barton Court Grammar School notifications row

A baffled parent has been receiving glowing school reports about her son’s behaviour – despite him leaving four months ago.

Bungling education chiefs at Barton Court Grammar have continued to send Samantha Fry notifications about 13-year-old Cameron, even though he left in November.

The 43-year-old, of Tenterden Drive, says she at first dismissed it as a mistake after receiving an email about a detention he had apparently been given, despite not being in school.

“I contacted the school and reminded them that he was no longer there,” she said.

“I was told it was sent by mistake so I thought nothing of it.”

But instead, every Friday this year, the mum-of-two received updates about Cameron’s behaviour on his online records.

The most recent this month show a teacher gave him house points for excellent achievement and contribution, as well as a point for sustained effort in religious education.

In a psychology lesson, a different teacher says he was given ‘verbal praise’.

“How was he given verbal praise when he wasn’t even there?” said Ms Fry.

“It makes a mockery of their behaviour points system.

"To me it just seems the school is not taking any notice of what children are doing.

"It’s quite amusing, but it’s actually really wrong for all the kids who are still there and under a tremendous amount of pressure to do well.”

Ms Fry claims she even received an email from the member of staff who had excluded Cameron saying he had to attend a compulsory learning support session or he would be marked down as truant.

She says the emails have stopped since Cameron, who has ADHD, started at a specialist school and was taken off the roll at Barton Court.

The school’s head, Kirstin Cardus, says the mistake was made by a new teacher who has now been given further training.

“We have a new teacher who is teaching both these classes and she was pleased with the class and gave all the class a reward,” she said.

“As he [Cameron] was on the roll, he received this reward like all others in the class, who were or were not present.

“The teacher has been spoken to and further training applied as she did not realise this would happen.”
