'Chaos' as Wincheap in Canterbury closed for emergency railway repairs

A main road into a city has been shut so Network Rail can carry out emergency repairs.

The A28 Wincheap Green in Canterbury closed at midnight last night, between Gordon Road and Wincheap roundabout.

Julia Collins, who drove through the diversion route this afternoon, described scenes of backed-up traffic throughout the area.

"It's absolute chaos," she said.

"All of the back streets are just absolutely blocked up.

"It took me half an hour to do what is usually a two minute stretch.

"At one point there was an ambulance behind me on Zealand Road that couldn't get through because it was stuck."

The closure has been put in place to allow Network Rail to carry out work on a railway bridge.

A spokesman confirmed the road is due to reopen at 5am on Monday.
