Canterbury man David Connor, accused of causing chef Alun Williams' clingfilm death in Dover along with Richard Bowler, admits lying to police

One of the men accused of unlawfully killing a Dover chef during a “Master-Slave” bondage session has admitted lying to police.

David Connor, 23, had initially denied being at the flat when Alun Williams died after being wrapped in clingfilm, PVC and a leather hood.

But hours after being interviewed, he confessed to officers that he had helped in the kinky sex session and had spanked the P&O ferry chef.

Connor, of Sturry Road, Canterbury claimed that friend Richard Bowler, 35, had discovered Mr Williams dead on the bed of the flat in East Street, Dover.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Williams, from Shepherdswell, who died after a kinky sex and drugs session went wrong in August last year.

A jury at Canterbury Crown Court heard how Connor worked as a live-in carer for Bowler, who sufferers from cerebral palsy.

He is alleged to have told officers that after discovering Mr Williams had been discovered dead, Bowler planned to fly abroad and even checked for flights on his computer.

“I tried to calm Richard down. He was saying he wanted to kill himself, because of his self pity.

"Then he wanted to call up for tickets. I think he actually went onto his laptop to check out how much the tickets were as well.

“I talked him out of not doing that as well. I think he said he wanted to fly to Malaga and also get some alcohol.”

"I am sorry about lying, I just wanted to distance myself. I didn’t know it would be dangerous..." - David Connor

Connor claimed he had been playing football at Sandwich earlier in the day and had returned to the flat.

He later admitted that he took part in wrapping Mr Williams in clingfilm in the hope of earning some money.

“Richard told me that he (Mr Williams) enjoyed that sort of stuff. Richard enjoys sex with gay men. He enjoys what he does. He is known as a master and the person who comes is a slave.

“He talked to me about it but I didn’t want to know about it because I am not gay. He just tells me a little bit about what he does.”

Connor later claimed that after spanking Mr Williams he sat on the stairs as Bowler and Mr Williams had a four-hour sex session.

He told officers: “I am sorry about lying, I just wanted to distance myself. I didn’t know it would be dangerous.

“Richard told me that he (Mr Williams) would be coming round and told me I might get lucky and get some money for myself or something like that. So I sort of said yeah I would help.

“I helped him wrap the clingfilm round him. That’s all I did. I didn’t do more than that.”

Bowler is alleged to have told police that the chef asked to be “totally mummified” and was then laid on the bed.

Connor said that Bowler later called him because Mr Williams had stopped breathing and after calling family members, they alerted the ambulance services.

A pathologist concluded Mr Williams died from a heart attack brought on by excessive heat because the clingfilm, rubber sheets and hood prevented the body from cooling.

The trial continues.
