The father of a Kent University lecturer freed from a Brazilian prison at the weekend is concerned at his son’s decision to stay in the country.

English Language tutor Martin Boyle is trying to gain access to his estranged 16-year-old daughter who he hasn’t seen since 2001, and will not return to the UK until September 9.

But Peter Boyle thinks his son should have cut his losses and come home.

“The legal system in Brazil, well it’s not Britain,” he said from his home in Spalding, Lincolnshire.

“I’m concerned that they [Brazilian lawyers] will be smarter than he is at getting around their legal system and I worry that he’ll not come off very well in this situation.”

Mr Boyle was released from custody late on Friday night in Sao Paulo thanks to a challenge from his lawyer. He had been detained for nearly two weeks in a cell holding up to 22 inmates.

Brazilian authorities claimed the 45-year-old owed £4,000 in unpaid child maintenance.

He was arrested on arrival in the country, after his former Brazilian mother-in-law issued an arrest warrant against him.

The disputed amount was then paid by his father through the Foreign Office and British Consulate, but it was over a week before Mr Boyle tasted freedom.

Mr Boyle snr added: “He’s got a lot of faith in the lawyer who got him out of prison and he’s working very closely with him to try and get access to his daughter.”
