Dancers take stage by storm

Dancers at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School took to the stage on Thursday and Friday night with a colourful show called Spectacular, Spectacular.

More than 250 students spent the autumn term rehearsing for the school’s 19th annual dance evening, organised, designed and choreographed by head of dance Anette Stücker.

Ms Stücker praised the girls’ commitment.

"I am very proud of the hard work the girls have put in to finish the dances," she said.

"The last two weeks have been the busiest ever.

"As the dances took shape the girls gained in confidence and their excitement grew day by day.”

Senior dance club members created their own rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and girls in Year 11 produced a post-modern piece called Transformation, which was developed from challenging expressive arts GCSE coursework.

The school’s dance captain, Jane Ogilvie, helped create the choreography for Kung Fu Fightin’, a piece performed by girls in the year 8 and 9 dance club.

Jane, who runs the club, helped by fellow students Charlie Smith and Alice Stevens, said: “Dance evening is a major event for Langton girls as a vast number of students and teachers contribute, whether they are performing, supporting or assisting backstage.

“For some of the girls it is their first experience of performing and for the more experienced it is an opportunity to show off their talents.

"Ms Stücker and the girls put a lot of hard work into the show and it always proves to be an enjoyable and successful event."

The school was able to make best use of it’s music college status by providing a vibrant score ranging from classical to hip hop to support the 13 pieces of dance on show.
