Notorius BRG burglar William Willett falls asleep during break-in at burger restaurant

A tired burglar has found himself behind bars - after falling asleep while raiding a burger restaurant.

William Willett, 26, was discovered taking 40 winks by police after they were called to Notorious BRG in Castle Street, Canterbury.

Officers were alerted following reports the front door had been forced and found Willett snoozing on the floor.

Nearby was a bag of stolen goods he had swiped in the previous 24 hours.

Willett - who was also carrying a knife - admitted a series of offences and was this week jailed for two years and four months at Canterbury Crown Court.

The judge was told police had found the burglar asleep at Notorious BRG at about 7.30am on January 30.

Inside the bag was an iPad he had swiped from a car in Orange Street the previous day and a mobile phone taken from a vehicle in the Spring Lane area.

A sat nav pinched from a car in Stour Street was also found, with all three items returned to their owners.

Electrical items believed to have been stolen from the restaurant earlier that night were not recovered.

Willett - who in 2018 was jailed for abducting a teenager - was also sentenced for the theft of skateboarding equipment worth about £375 from a car in Harwich Street, Whitstable, on December 11, 2018. Officers linked him to that incident by his DNA.

PC Michael Kingwell said: "Willett may have dozed off on the job but our officers weren't sluggish in collecting the evidence that has brought him to justice.

"He'll have plenty of time to rest in his prison cell and I hope Canterbury's business owners can sleep easier knowing he is inside."
