Illegal immigrant discovery in Canterbury sparks arrest of man

A lorry driver was arrested following the discovery of 26 illegal immigrants in the back of his refrigerated HGV.

The 27-year-old, of no fixed address, was quizzed by officers after 24 men, one woman and a boy were found in the Romanian-registered HGV yesterday.

Emergency crews and an air ambulance rushed to the headquarters of fruit importer A Gomez Ltd when the discovery was made shortly before 11.30am.

The female migrant is said to have collapsed and was taken to a local hospital, while others in the HGV were handed over to Home Office immigration officials.

The driver of the lorry - which was travelling to the UK from Spain - was arrested on suspicion of assisting illegal entry to the UK.

He has since been released without charge.

The discovery was made two days after another 26 illegal immigrants - five of them children - were found huddled in the back of a lorry in Dartford.

They too were handed to border control enforcement.
