Firefighters rescued a woman feared dead from a blazing bungalow in Swalecliffe on Thursday.

Crews from Whitstable and Herne Bay were called to the home in Seafield Road after reports it had caught light just after 9am.

The elderly female occupant, believed to be in her 70s, was taken out of the house and to hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

Neighbour Maurice Bennett said: "It's a terrible thing to have happened and I thought the lady who lives there might have died.

"We could hear the glass popping out of the frames and the place looks gutted."

Firefighters closed off the road and brought the blaze under control in 20 minutes.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
