Jamie Price loses almost everything in fire at Sturry house

A devastated mum-of-three has told how a mystery fire ripped through the house she has called home for 20 years.

Jamie Price, 38, and her children Reece, 20, Kendall, 12, and Kadence, 11, lost almost everything when their three-bedroom semi in Vauxhall Crescent went up in flames.

The blaze destroyed dozens of treasured possessions and has left the family homeless and living in a hostel.

Single mum Jamie has relived the ordeal, telling how she was alerted to the blaze by her son.

She said: "Reece was in his bedroom with his girlfriend at the time and the two girls were downstairs with me.

"He shouted down, ‘Mum there’s thick smoke coming from your bedroom’. I ran upstairs and opened my bedroom door.

"All I could see was that the left hand side of my bed was alight. Then, within seconds, the flames ran up the curtains and everything just went up.

"I was thinking, ‘Is there any way I can stop this? Is there any way I can put this out?’ But we had to just get out."

Four fire crews raced to the scene to tackle the blaze, but Jamie’s bedroom was completely destroyed and there was 50% damage to the upstairs of the house.

The Red Cross was on hand to offer emotional support to the family, earning plaudits from Jamie for their help.

The girls attend Spires Academy, where staff bought them brand new school uniforms and extra clothing and toiletries.

A fundraising page has also been set up to collect donations for the family.

Samantha Wood, who created the page, said of Jamie: "She is a hardworking, proud lady who always seems to pull the short straw in life. Please help them to replace what they have lost."

Jamie said the support had helped her and her family in the aftermath of the fire.

She said: "The school has been amazing, the Red Cross were brilliant, and my neighbours and friends and family have been incredible.

"It has been overwhelming, so I would really like to thank everyone for their support.

"It’s just too much to take in at the moment. I can’t sleep at all. When I look at these things, I think, ‘Can I salvage that?’

"But fire crews said most of our stuff would have to go. Everything is smoke-damaged and my room is ruined. Photographs, special things to me, my books, everything. All gone.

"I have to keep smiling because otherwise I would just cry."
