The person who died after being hit by a train at Sturry railway station was a teenage girl, it has been confirmed today.

The tragedy happened at the station near Canterbury on Friday evening.

British Transport Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene at 7.25pm, following a report of a casualty.

A BTP spokesman said: "Officers and paramedics attended however, sadly, a teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene."

The girl's family have been informed.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

Sturry councillor Louise Harvey-Quirke has extended her condolences to the victim's loved ones.

She said: "As a mum, my heart goes out to the family and friends of the person who died in Friday night's incident. I simply cannot imagine what they are going through.

"While I have raised a number of serious concerns around safety at Sturry railway station in recent months, it would be wrong to speculate on the causes of this tragedy while the authorities carry out their investigations.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the driver of the train and all who have been affected by this incident."

Sturry and District United Church was open all day on Saturday, to give members of the community space for reflection, prayer or to light a candle.
