Two men have been arrested following a high speed police chase between Canterbury and Herne Bay.

The Londoners, aged 16 and 18, are being held in police custody on suspicion of stealing a BMW.

Specially trained officers used a "stinger" device to force the car to stop in Canterbury Road, Herne Bay on Thursday morning.

The BMW was eventually stopped after a police number plate recognition (ANPR) camera flagged the vehicle up as suspected stolen, when it was seen being driven in Canterbury around 10am.

Shortly after, a patrol saw the vehicle in Sturry, but the BMW did not stop despite being signalled to do so by the officers.

It's reported the BMW knocked the wing mirror off a van and collided with a horsebox as it was stopped in Herne Bay. A horse in transit at the time was not injured.

The surrounding roads were closed whilst officers ensured no spikes from the stinger device were left on the highway and the BMW was recovered.

The road was reopened at 11.30am.

Sgt Dan Devico, who was in charge of the incident said: "Good teamwork and communication between the officers involved led to these arrests.

"I hope those who were disrupted by the road closures will be pleased to hear that we were able to arrest two people in connection with the theft of a high value vehicle.

"I would also like to thank the public who were patient whilst we carried out our investigations."
