The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss spotted filming near Canterbury Cathedral

A Hollywood star has been spotted filming near Canterbury Cathedral.

Elisabeth Moss, 40, who found fame on The West Wing, Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale, was seen in the Buttermarket shooting scenes for new series The Veil.

Sporting a navy suit, The Invisible Man star was in good spirits as she chatted to extras and crew members.

Crowds gathered to watch as the actress strolled along Burgate before bumping into an elderly man as part of a scene.

Winner of two Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmy Awards, the actress’ success in television has led to entertainment news website Vulture dubbing her the “Queen of Peak TV”.

Produced by Minim Productions, bosses on set remained tight-lipped about the details of the series – with some clapper boards referring to the programme as Metamorph.

However, it is believed The Veil will be a mini-series akin to BBC’s much-loved Killing Eve.

Cathedral officials previously confirmed a television production company would be taking over the historic building and part of the Precincts tomorrow (May 23).

Bosses at the landmark have recently shifted their policy on the historical setting being used by film and television crews, and are now actively seeking location inquiries.

Cathedral spokesman Nathan Crouch says it not only provides valuable income but also raises the cathedral’s profile as a visitor attraction.

“I think it’s a fantastic way of showcasing us and promoting film tourism,” he said.

He also revealed the cathedral had been approached by other companies interested in filming there, although no productions have yet been confirmed.

Traders in the area also received a letter from the locations manager for Minim Productions, Karin Kavanagh, reading: “Our intention is to feature the Cathedral Quarter as we film a few important scenes in Buttermarket, Burgate, Mercery Lane and Butchery Lane on Monday, May 22.”

“We will spend a few hours in each location, moving from street to street throughout the day in an effort to mitigate any disruption.”

According to the magazine Variety, The Veil will be similar to Killing Eve in feel and style, and will focus on “the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London”.

The Veil is written and produced by Steven Knight, who is best known for the hit series Peaky Blinders and the new adaptation of Great Expectations on the BBC, starring Olivia Colman.

When complete, it is expected to air on Hulu in America, which is the official streaming service of FX Television – a subsidiary of Disney.

The presence of celebrities in and around the county has been on the rise in recent times as production companies begin to tap into the wealth of riches.

Stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield were spotted for the second time in two months filming for a new Hollywood blockbuster.

And last week, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner was seen in Herne Bay filming for a new ITV drama called Joan.

Set in London, it is being billed as a powerful female story that will premiere on the free streaming service ITVX.
