ACADEMY award winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker-Powell has been awarded an honorary fellowship by Canterbury Christ Church University.

Mrs Schoonmaker-Powell, widow of director Michael Powell, who made the film A Canterbury Tale in 1944, said: "When I first came to Canterbury I was struck by the nature of the people I met in Christ Church University’s media department.

"Immediately I felt a bond with them and their enthusiastic and serious commitment to art.

"My husband grew up here so to receive this fellowship and be part of the community of Canterbury is wonderful."

She received her fellowship for her work with the university's media department where she has given masterclasses.
