THREE new Deputy Lieutenants of Kent have been appointed. They are Brig John Meardon and Sir John Mummery, both from Canterbury, and Lady Clarke, of Stone-cum-Ebony, near Tenteren.

Brig Meardon has been the Receiver General of Canterbury Cathedral – chief executive and the senior lay member of staff – since 1998. He retired from the Royal Marines after 34 years' service.

As a member of the Cathedral Chapter he has participated in matters great and small affecting the life of the Cathedral including the enthronement of the present Archbishop.

Sir John, a Lord Justice of Appeal since 1996, is from a farming family near Dover and lives in the Canterbury area.

He is a trustee of Wye Rural Museum Trust, and is involved in advisory and disciplinary commissions and tribunals of Church of England.

Lady Clarke is married Anthony Clarke, presently the Master of the Rolls, and has three children.

She was appointed a magistrate in 1987 and soon afterwards became a member of the independent monitoring board of Blantyre House Prison, Goudhurst, where she is still a trustee of the vocational trust.

Announcing the new appointments, the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willett, said: “They are joining a network of fine men and women whose role it is to support the monarchy and celebrate Kent.”
