A man had to be taken to hospital on Monday night to be treated for smoke inhalation following a fire at a flat in Canterbury.

The victim, who was aged in his forties, had left food cooking unattended on the kitchen stove which burnt and caught light.

Neighbours called the emergency services at around 11.38pm after a smoke alarm in the property in Elham Road, Wincheap, Canterbury, was triggered.

Although fire damage to the flat was minimal, it was smoke logged and the occupant had to be led to safety by fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus.

Following the incident, Kent Fire Service repeated their warning to householders not to leave food cooking unattended.
