Liz Truss to visit Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Canterbury and Folkestone as Tory leadership race continues

The candidate who the bookies believe will become the next Prime Minister is visiting Kent this weekend.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is set to meet Conservative Party members at five locations across the county tomorrow.

In an email sent to local Tories - which has been seen by KentOnline - officials say the leadership hopeful will speak to activists in the Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Canterbury and Folkestone areas.

It says: "I am delighted to inform you that Liz Truss will be spending tomorrow in Kent.

"She will be visiting five locations across the county to meet members and answer their important questions about the contest ahead and why she wants to be Prime Minister."

Members who register to attend the meetings will be sent the exact locations of the events - which have not yet been revealed - tomorrow morning.

The message also notes there will be "light refreshments served" at no charge, although there will be a £5 raffle to offset the costs incurred by the person hosting the talk.

Ms Truss made it through to the final round of the leadership contest earlier this week, after winning the support of 113 Conservative MPs.

Meanwhile, her rival for the top job, Rishi Sunak, won 137 votes.

Despite this, bookmakers have Ms Truss as favourite after early indications suggested she has the bigger backing among party members, who will make the ultimate decision.

The pair will tour the UK to take part in 12 hustings for the Tory members who will vote for their next leader, with the result being announced on September 5.
