Eyewitnesses say one car hit another before almost going through the front window of the supermarket.

Police were then alerted at 7.25pm to a man reportedly damaging a car near Whitefriars – believed to have been one of those involved in the crash.

The same man is then alleged to have walked through the busy shopping precinct assaulting random people – both women and men – before he was detained by security staff at Tesco and arrested by police at 7.27pm.

He is currently being held on suspicion of assault, driving while unfit through drugs, criminal damage, failing to stop after a collision, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and a road traffic offence.

The man, of no fixed address, will be interviewed later today.
