Canterbury MP Julian Brazier steps down as Minister for Reserves

Julian Brazier has stepped down as Minister for Reserves at the MoD after backing Andrea Leadsom in the race to be Prime Minister.

The Canterbury and Whitstable MP was appointed minister two years ago on July 15, 2014.

Leadsom dramatically pulled out of the Tory leadership battle, effectively gifting the keys to number 10 to new Prime Minister Theresa May.

Mr Brazier said: "It has been a most exciting and challenging two years, serving with Michael Fallon and a great team, after my unexpected mobilisation.

"It has been a huge privilege working with our Armed Forces, Regular and Reserve, at this time of great international challenges. I am pleased to have been able to watch the Reserve forces grow in size, capability and roles."

He added: "Theresa [May]'s agenda is something I shall be proud to support from the back benches. I admire her commitment to negotiating Brexit, taking control of our borders and improving the life chances of the next generation, especially the most disadvantaged.

"I look forward to new challenges on the back benches."

Mr Brazier was elected Conservative MP for Canterbury and Whitstable in 1987 and has also served as an officer in the Territorial Army for over a decade.
