Police, ambulance and fire crews help free trapped man, in his 80s, after his car overturns in Whitstable Road, Canterbury

A man in his 80s was cut free from the wreckage of his car after it flipped over this afternoon.

The pensioner was driving along Whitstable Road in Canterbury when the accident happened just before 12.30pm.

He is thought to have hit a traffic island and a lamppost, which caused his Vauxhall Astra to overturn.

Police, three ambulances and fire crews were called to the scene, near the junction with Cherry Garden Road.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the man from his Vauxhall Astra and left him in the care of paramedics.

He suffered a head injury, cuts and bruises in the smash, and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford for treatment.

His wife, who was in the passenger seat, managed to get out of the car unaided. She suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed in both directions and drivers were warned to use other routes or expect delays.

Engineers from Kent County Council worked to fix the damaged lamppost and traffic island.
