Pupils get the beat at drumming workshop

Education - and food - Ghanian style was experienced by pupils at St Peter’s Primary School in Canterbury.

During a week-long celebration of its link with a school in Ghana, they were visited by Christopher Barnieh, assistant head at Santasi Ma Primary School in Kumasa.

He talked to the children about life in the west African country and its education system.

The children also held a drumming a workshop, cooked and ate Ghanian food, listened to Ghanian story-telling and created works of art.

The week culminated in a performance at St Peter’s Church where pupils were joined by Ghanian musicians George Fiawoo and Emanuel Okine of Music for Change.

Head teacher Carol Townsend said: “The children have learned a lot and have been thinking about the differences between school life here and in Ghana.”

A teacher from St Peter’s is due to visit Ghana on a return visit next year. The trips are funded by the British Council.
