Rebel Prole writes and produces rap The Bury about his love for Wincheap and Canterbury

A promising rapper’s “love song” to Canterbury has been a hit with music fans in the city and further afield.

Thousands of people have listened to The Bury, which was written by Bobby Hayward about his days growing up in Wincheap.

The 28-year-old, known by his artist name Rebel Prole, uses the lyrics to paint a vivid picture of his childhood.

Such has been its success, it has been played on BBC Introducing, which supports undiscovered and unsigned musicians.

Now former Langton schoolboy Bobby is working on a professional video for the rap, which he wrote in less than an hour.

He said: “I was freestyling and after the third verse I realised I needed to write it down. I wrote it within an hour, found a beat, and it went from there.

“The response has been amazing – unbelievable really.”

In the rap Bobby talks about day-to-day life as a youngster in Wincheap, yearning to be by the seaside in Whitstable and causing mischief in the Dane John gardens.

He said: “A lot of people who grew up in Canterbury in the 90s, where the rap is set, can really resonate with the lyrics.

“Everything I’ve spoken about is 100% my memories and personal to me – the memorial in Wincheap where we used to chill out in the summer and maybe get into a bit of trouble, my cousins in Spring Lane – they’re still there now. "

“The lyrics about Whitstable – I rap about wanting to be there on a summer’s day as a teenager, and every summer I’m in London now, I still I wish I was back in Whitstable.”

As well as performing, Bobby also runs his own record label, Country Club Records, working with eight other artists.

He has collaborated with popular Canterbury band Coco and the Butterfields and even played a part in setting up the inner-city music festival City Sound Project.

He hopes to continue his success with the release of an album next March – fittingly called Canterbury Tales.
