More than 50 drivers were given a £30 fine on Monday after police responded to the concerns of residents living around Brymore Road in Canterbury.

Thirty-nine drivers were given fixed penalty notices after they ignored the warning signs not to turn into Brymore Road from Sturry Road between 7.30am and 9.30am.

Residents had asked for action to be taken against the motorists who use the road as a rat run to avoid Sturry Road roundabout during the morning rush hour.

The issue had been made one of three top priorities to be addressed through the Northgate Partners and Communities Together (PACT) group.

Group co-chairman Susan Chivers said: “This is raised at all our meetings.

"Residents are worried about the speed of some of the drivers particularly at the 90 degree bends in Hudson Road.

"The noise as some of the drivers screech through the area is also causing a nuisance.

“We welcome the action taken to restore these roads to the residential areas that they should be.”

During the morning officers from Canterbury’s neighbourhood team also gave 15 fixed penalty notices and fines to 15 drivers who used the bus only lane in Tourtel Road.

Police community support officer for the Brymore area Steve Coulter said: “We will be repeating the operation and I would urge drivers to adhere to the signs that clearly indicate what is permitted.”
