Canterbury shoplifter who stole 32-inch TV from Sainsbury's jailed

A "brazen" shoplifter who walked out of a supermarket with a 32-inch TV has been jailed for two years.

Joseph Scott, of Herne Bay Road in Sturry, stole more than £4,000 worth of goods from supermarkets across Canterbury, throughout September and October.

The 31-year-old's string of 11 offences began on September 21 at Sainsbury's in Kingsmead Road, where at 12.40pm he walked out with a 32-inch television in plain sight of staff.

Between September 25 and October 29, the serial shoplifter went on to target Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer stores.

He stole a range of items including joints of meat, ink cartridges, toys, electrical goods and several coats.

All of the offences were caught on CCTV and clearly identified Joseph Scott as the offender.

He was arrested on October 29, and went on to admit 11 counts of shoplifting.

He was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on December 4.

PC William Pope, the investigating officer for the case, said: "Joseph Scott was nothing but brazen when he stole expensive goods from retailers across Canterbury, clearly believing he could operate above the law.

"I hope that this significant sentence serves as a warning to others who think they can carry out such crimes and get away with it."
