Travellers pitch up at Wincheap Park and Ride in Canterbury

Travellers have pitched up at a Park and Ride - as council bosses hope to evict the group "as quickly as the law allows".

Two caravans and a couple of vans set up camp at the 590-space site at Wincheap, Canterbury, yesterday.

City council officials have asked the group to leave the car park, with discussions expected to continue throughout the rest of the day.

Local authority spokesman Rob Davies told KentOnline: "Our enforcement officers have carried out the welfare checks the law requires and have asked them to leave.

"Officers will continue to have those discussions throughout the day and are pleased the travellers are engaging with the team.

"Meanwhile, in the background, our legal team is exploring the council's options as a matter of urgency with a view to evicting the group as quickly as the law allows should we be unable to reach agreement for them to move on."
