Canterbury: Traffic woes as St Martin's Hill remains shut following burst water main

Traffic misery is continuing to grip parts of Canterbury following a ruptured water main.

Contractors repaired a burst main in St Martin's Hill on Friday but the road still remains shut - with an unknown reopening date.

Due to the closure, cars are being diverted through Spring Lane and St Augustine's Road which are both littered with traffic calming speed bumps.

It is not known when the diversion, which is causing lengthy delays, will be lifted.

South East Water’s distribution Manager Mark Rice said: “To keep the public and our contractors safe while we carried out the repair, we had to close the road. The damaged pipe was repaired on Friday evening and as soon as all the work needed to repair the road is completed it will be reopened.

“We are not aware of any of our customers being without water as a result of the burst, but some may have had lower pressure than normal for a short time.

“Unfortunately incidents like this do happen on our high pressure network of underground pipes."
