Wetherspoons toasts victory

Wetherspoons has been granted planning permission to convert a former cinema in Whitstable into a pub.

The company has already gained a premises licence for the 1930s building in Oxford Street which is now used as a bingo hall.

Dozens of people objected to the proposal fearing it could lead to noise and nuisance and the demise of other pubs.

But some also believe it may rejuvinate that part of the town.

Canterbury city council's development control committee approved the same opening hours as its licensing committee.

But an obstacle remains over a public walkway at the rear of the pub between the building and the car park which may prevent the company from creating a pub garden.
