Justin Luchford is ready to make understudy goalkeeper Nick Shaw his new first choice at the Belmont.

Shaw, 23, made a string of fine saves in Whitstable’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Margate on Tuesday night.

And with Rob French’s proposed move from Faversham still in the balance, Shaw could start the season in goal.

Town boss Luchford (pictured) said: "Nick is showing me what a quality keeper he is. The Rob French thing is still between the two clubs but we won’t need him if Nick carries on like this.

"He was my No.2 at Faversham and at Whitstable last year and he’s been after a chance to show what he can do.

"I think he’s matured and as with all No.2s, at some point they want to become first choice.

"He’s a good lad who’s fit, motivated and athletic so maybe this is his time. I’d have no issues with that at all."

Luchford still has plenty of work to do with his outfield players ahead of the Ryman League, Division 1 South opener at Leatherhead on August 18.

He said: "I wouldn’t say I’m close to knowing my starting line-up.

"Fitness-wise we’re getting there but there are still a few things to sort out so I’m glad we’ve got a few weeks before the season starts."

Whitstable continue their pre-season preparations with a home game against Canterbury City on Saturday (3pm).
