Airfield near Canterbury put up for sale for £1.3 million

While the future of Manston airport remains up in the air, a rare opportunity has arisen to buy another runway in Kent which is already operational.

For just shy of £2 million you could get your hands of an airfield near Canterbury - and get a bungalow thrown in for good measure.

Known as Maypole Airfield, the 700-metre grass landing strip may only accommodate light aircraft but it's the nearest to France and popular with both private and commercial pilots.

The property is being marketed through Strutt & Parker in two separate lots - the airfield with extensive hanger buildings, horse stabling and almost 55 acres of pastureland for £1.3 million and a three-bedroomed bungalow set in more than an acre of gardens for £675,000.

The owners for the last 20 years, Andy and Sally Haigh, have decided it is time to spread their wings.

"What started out as a bit of a hobby has become a full time job and commitment and we have decided we need to step back a bit, " said Andy

"We have the advantage of being closest to France," said Andy. Some days I reckon I could fly to Calais to go shopping quicker than I could drive into Canterbury and park," he said.

According to Strutt and Parker, as well as offering hangar and open aircraft parking, the airfield has customs facilities and is known as a useful stop over for those wishing to break their flight before crossing the Channel. There is also a dedicated helicopter landing area.

As well as being suitable for use for grazing and haymaking, the remaining land has potential for a variety of purposes, and could be used as a vineyard or for growing crops.
