There was disappointment for Canterbury Hockey Club duo Mel Clewlow and Jen Wilson when they lanched their Olympic campaigns on Sunday.

Clewlow was a member of the Great Britain team beaten 5-1 in Pool B by reigning Olympic champions Germany, while Wilson's South Africa fared even worse, losing 6-0 to Holland, the world's top ranked side.

Crista Cullen's 29th-minute short corner strike meant Britain only trailed 2-1 at half-time against the Germans, but two goals in the space of three second-half minutes swung the match decisively in their opponents' favour.

Britain are in action again at 1.30pm BST on Tuesday when they face world number two side Argentina, who were surprisingly held 2-2 by 11th seeds USA.

South Africa also play on Tuesday, taking on China at 11.30am BST.
