Canterbury City host Southern Counties East Premier Division champions Erith & Belvedere as they aim to pull off a great escape

Canterbury City could pull off an unlikely Southern Counties East Premier Division escape.

To achieve survival this Saturday, they need to win their final fixture at Sittingbourne’s Woodstock ground - against champions Erith & Belvedere - and hope Welling Town are beaten by Whitstable.

City could also survive if they win and Holmesdale collect less than two points from their last three games.

They have surprised everyone by taking their fight against relegation right to the death amid a good run.

Forward Henry Arnold now has 10 goals from his last six matches after scoring twice in their 2-1 win at fourth-placed Erith Town last weekend.

Boss Danny Lawrence said: “What can I say about this group of lads? I asked them for one big effort, I asked them for mental toughness and they delivered!

“Going away to Erith is always such a tough place to go, so to come back with three points is testament to the boys and how far we have come. We went there with a game plan and we executed it superbly.

“It’s an outside chance but we have taken it right to the death, so this week is about preparing right and giving it one last big push.”

Faversham Strike Force lost their Division 1 play-off semi-final 4-2 at Lydd on Wedneday.

Ali Wren got Gary Axford’s troops level after the hosts had taken an early lead, but three goals in eight second-half minutes made it 3-1 to Lydd.

Kane Taylor struck in the 84th minute, although that effort proved little more than a consolation.
