Ex-Kent stars help boost McCague's benefit fund

THE Martin McCague benefit fund for Kent cricketer Martin McCague received a £5,100 boost following Monday’s Royal Cinque Ports golf day organised by club stalwart Don Beney.

Businesses and cricket supporters from across the south-east supported the event, the 22nd of its type to be planned by the former club president from West Wickham.

Many of the county’s present squad of players took part together with the stars of yesteryear including Chris Tavare, Brian Luckhurst, Bob Wilson and John Shepherd.

The winner from the cricketing entrants proved to be former West Indies all-rounder Shepherd, who carded 33 Stableford points off a handicap of nine to finish three clear of next season’s beneficiary Mark Ealham.

The sponsors’ prize went to Gary Coldwell, representing Croydon-based Henry Riley and Son, who shot an excellent five over par round to score 39 points.

Andrew Reason, director of Chatham firm Reason and Co, took second place ahead of Coldwell’s playing partner Jim Hendley.

The prize for the longest drive down the 18th went to Brad Smith from Zendrill Scaffolding near Gillingham, while John Wright from Eschmann Equipment of Lancing took the award for nearest the pin.

The day ended with a presentation dinner at The Royal Cinque Ports Club, at which beneficiary McCague thanked organiser Mr Beney and club officials for their hospitality and incredibly challenging course.
