FARNHAM: national title

VETERAN Kent athlete Denise Farnham is off to the World Biathle Championships again after lifting the national title in her age group.

Farnham, from Sturry near Canterbury, was a comfortable winner in the women’s 40 to 50 years’ class at Millfield after clocking 9minutes 36seconds for the event, which comprises a 100m swim, sandwiched between two 1,000m runs.

Farnham, whose win also clinched her the national grand prix title in her age group, now heads for Bavaria in September.

It will be her fourth world championship and she will be looking to sign off her last year in the age group by adding to her tally of two golds and a silver.

“I was really pleased with my win and I’m looking forward to Bavaria,” said the 49-year-old, whose two world gold medals, came in Germany in 2001, and Monaco last year.

“The weather at Millfield was not that good. It was wet and windy but the time was about what I’d normally do and I was 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up.”

Farnham is unbeaten in the biathle this season, having won all three grands prix she has competed in.
