REIGNING CHAMPION: Gary Tottman is through to the semi-finals

REIGNING Kent Messenger Sunshine Challenge Golf champion Gary Tottman is through to the semi-finals of this year’s competition.

The 30-year-old Canterbury taxi driver booked his place in the last four with a 4&2 win over Etchinghill 12-handicapper Steve Rich.

And, remarkably, his father David, is also through to the semis, which will be played at Sheerness Golf Club on Friday, September 30.

David, winner of the tournament in 1994, when he took the title at Moatlands, beat Sheerness 10-handicapper Chris Thomas 2&1.

David will play Steve Lovell (h4, Sittingbourne) in his semi-final.

Former Gillingham Football Club star Steve, now manager of Southern League Division 1 East Sittingbourne, beat Alan Carter (h10, Romney Warren) 7&5 in his quarter-final.

The last four is completed by Richard Randall (h3, Kings Hill) who beat Terry Witham (h14, Hampstead, London) 6&4.

The winner of the tournament will represent the Kent Messenger Group in an all-expenses paid trip to Portugal in November against more than a dozen other regional newspaper winners over three rounds of Stableford competition.
