Fleming: We're thrilled Waugh's on board

KENT'S newest recruit Steve Waugh arrived at Canterbury's St Lawrence ground yesterday determined to help his new county to glory.

Waugh is replacing Andrew Symonds who is linking up with the Australian one-day squad for their triangular series in Kenya after Darren Lehmann pulled out with a broken finger.

The Aussie skipper’s arrival will give a fresh impetus to Kent’s quest for silverware in the Frizzell County Championship and Norwich Union League.

Club captain Matthew Fleming said: “It's terrific for us and we’re thrilled that he's come to Kent. I just want Steve Waugh to be Steve Waugh. He’s a winner, a great leader and great competitor and he's got massive knowledge and experience. “Steve Waugh's a giver, not a taker.”

Kent coach Ian Brayshaw said: “Just meeting him at the airport was a big thrill for me. I'm Australian and he stands for a lot of good things about Australian cricket but from the club’s point of view I think there are many, many plusses.

“I'm in my first year as coach and David Fulton's in his first year as captain so I'm sure we'll all learn a lot from him."
