Kent's reigning emerging player-of-the-year Hamid Qadri pens contract extension to stay until at least the end of the 2024 summer

Kent’s reigning emerging player-of-the-year has signed a contract extension.

Off-spinner Hamid Qadri, 22, impressed with bat and ball as Kent last year won the Royal London One-Day Cup.

He has committed to stay with Kent until at least the end of next summer, penning a one-year extension.

Qadri said: “I had a great year personally in 2022 and to win my first trophy was really special.

“Kent is the best place for me to be right now to continue my development as a player - I’ve benefited a lot from working with the likes of Min Patel and James Tredwell, two guys that made their names as spinners at Kent - and I’m looking forward to the start of the season.”

Kent director of cricket Paul Downton added: “Hamid has started to deliver on the potential he showed when he first joined the club.

“He is back to enjoying his bowling again and spinning the ball hard. This has given him a lot more confidence and makes him a dangerous opponent.

“With his batting also improving at a rapid rate, Hamid made significant progress in 2022.

“He is still very young as a spinner but, with his natural, self-taught talent and his fierce determination, Hamid is one of a number of exciting young players at Kent who will, hopefully, all grow together.”

Qadri joined Kent on a three-year contract ahead of the 2020 season having made his first-class debut for Derbyshire against Glamorgan in 2017, aged 16. When doing so, he produced figures of 5-60 in the second innings.

But last year, he seemed to find slightly more consistency.

He took 4-36 against Northamptonshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup and also claimed 6-129 in County Championship Division 1 against Lancashire earlier in the season.

Qadri was Kent Spitfires’ top wicket-taker, with 15, in their successful One-Day Cup campaign. In their final win at Trent Bridge, he took 1-43, dismissing Lancashire opener Keaton Jennings for 72.

In first-class cricket, the right-hander surpassed his previous best score with the bat twice - scoring 77 against Lancashire in April, followed by 87 against Somerset in the final match of the 2022 season.
