Chris Woollcott insists his Canterbury side ‘is not a million miles away’ from where he wants them to be after City earned their first win under their new management team.

Having taken over before Christmas, joint-managers Woollcott and Josh Hall watched their troops score their first goals of their reign and claim their first victory when beating Bearsted 2-1 on Saturday.

Second-half strikes from Thomas Ngegba and substitute Liam Middleton saw City come from behind to claim the points while, in a further boost, Liam Quinn has re-joined the club.

“It was good to get a win,” said Woollcott.

“This time last week, we were just after a goal!

"We didn’t play that well, to be fair. But you could see, when we scored our first goal, the confidence that gave the players.

“The players all looked a few inches taller after that.

“We didn’t play particularly well, especially in the first half, but we managed to grind it out. To be fair, I don’t think Bearsted played very well, either.

“It was good for us to get the win without playing our best.”

Canterbury have signed defender Quinn but Woollcott doesn’t foresee making wholesale changes to the squad which he put together alongside Hall last month.

Woollcott said: "We have signed Liam Quinn. He has loads of experience.

“We are not a million miles away. We want to work with players to improve them.

“We are not going to be chopping and changing, bar maybe making one or two more signings. We are pretty settled now.”

After beating Bearsted, City are ninth in Southern Counties East Premier Division.

Woollcott said: “Bearsted are no mugs. They beat (leaders) Beckenham a few weeks ago.

“We don’t fear anyone but we go into every game looking for a win, like everybody does.

“We aren’t getting carried away and we won’t set any targets for the end of the season but we want to keep putting in good performances which will, hopefully, bring good results and we’ll see where that takes us.”

City’s Challenge Cup clash against Tunbridge Wells, postponed on Wednesday, has been rescheduled for January 22.
