Bodycam footage released as police seize vehicles and make arrests in anti-social driver crackdown at Bluewater and across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Medway

Bodycam footage has been released as police seize vehicles and make several arrests following a countywide crackdown on anti-social drivers.

Separate police operations took place over the weekend at Bluewater shopping centre in Greenhithe and parts of Tonbridge and Malling as part of targeted action.

It follows numerous reports from fed-up residents of motorists speeding, endangering other road users and causing excessive noise.

More than 50 vehicles were stopped and their drivers spoken to - including a group of motorcyclists seen entering Bluewater at high speed.

In bodycam footage released by police an officer can be heard saying to one motorcyclist: “I’ve put my blue light on for you but you’ve taken quite a considerable time to stop. Is there a reason for that?”

In another clip officers can be heard remonstrating with another motorist who is alleged to have driven down a footpath.

Of those stopped, 19 were reported for traffic offences, including speeding, careless driving and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Five vehicles were found to be either uninsured or untaxed, and they were seized. Two people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

One has since been charged.

Zac Austin, 19, of Chipstead Park, Sevenoaks, has been charged with drink-driving. He was bailed to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 29.

Dispersal orders were also put in place this weekend in specified areas across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Medway, which included Medway City Estate, Medway Valley Leisure Park and North Farm industrial estate in Tonbridge.

The orders gave officers additional powers to direct those responsible for anti-social behaviour to leave the area and risk arrest if they returned.

In West Peckham, Mereworth, Plaxtol, Trench and Hadlow, officers were on the look-out for off-road vehicles following concerns raised.

Those living in the area had reported to police that off-road motorbikes, quad bikes and other vehicles were being used anti-socially.

Police used both marked and unmarked vehicles during an operation in which four vehicles were seized, one of which had been stolen.

Nine vehicles, including four motorbikes and one e-scooter, were stopped and one person was issued a Community Resolution Order for possession of cannabis.

Superintendent Nick Sparkes said: “This weekend’s activity was in response to concerns raised by residents and local stakeholders, and we are committed to ensuring people can enjoy their community without being disturbed by those intent on using vehicles antisocially.

“During this weekend, officers were able to talk to lots of motorists who were supportive and positive about the police initiative, and those who had committed offences were dealt with robustly and accordingly.”

The District Commander for Tonbridge and Malling, Chief Inspector Stuart Paul, added: “Residents have a right to live peacefully and without fear and we understand the detrimental impact this behaviour can have on a community.

“We have dedicated beat officers who act as a single point of contact and anyone with future concerns can raise these directly with us and we will ensure action is taken.”
