Battersea dog Luke the mongrel looking for new home after spending Valentine's Day alone

Britain's loneliest dog could soon find a forever home after people rushed to adopt him following a Valentine's Day spent alone.

Luke has been waiting for more than 200 days but has had a rush of people looking to adopt him after an appeal.

The five-year-old mongrel, who is in the care of the Battersea Brands Hatch dogs home, is still looking for the one but saw a dozen inquiries for him yesterday.

He has been at the Kent home five times longer than the 35-day average.

Keepers believe part of the reason for Luke's long wait is due to his relationships with other dogs.

Despite being a large dog, he is said to be a big softy and a little scared of other dogs and is looking for an owner who will help build up his confidence and take care of him.

The former stray arrived at Battersea and staff are unsure about his previous history but he loves to be around people.

Centre manager Michelle Bevan said: "It’s heartbreaking knowing Luke spent the day without anybody to love after nobody came to meet him for a date.

"Thankfully, Battersea staff were on hand to show Luke plenty of love and affection instead.

“Despite being a large dog, Luke is really just a big softie and enjoys nothing more than to cuddle up by a radiator with his favourite people and a cuddly toy.

"We’re really hoping that someone will love him for the big lapdog that he truly is and give him the chance to be loved as he deserves.”

Luke is often nervous in busy places and is therefore looking for someone who lives in a quiet location to go on long walks. He also has some ear and skin issues so his new owner would need to be able to manage his diet.

Michelle added: “Luke may have a few quirks, but he really does have so much love to offer the right person. He may not be perfect but is absolutely worth it.”

Anyone who can find a home for Luke can contact Battersea Brands Hatch on bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk or by calling 01474 874994.
