Driver runs off after crashing into car on A2 near Dartford Golf Club

A couple who were involved in a 60mph hit-and-run have said they're lucky to be alive.

Portuguese Joao Magalhaes and his wife Tachiana, 32, were driving home after watching Mumford and Sons at the O2 Arena in London when their car was rammed off the road.

They were heading back from the gig on Thursday, November 29, when another car collided with theirs at around 11.30pm on the A2 near Dartford Golf Club.

Engineer Mr Magalhaes said: “We were driving back to our home in Wiltshire and went to overtake a car when out of nowhere another vehicle rammed us in the side.

“We ended up hitting the central reservation and were airborne for a while.

“We were sliding for about 400 metres and ended up on the side of the road.”

The driver of the car that hit the pair, thought to be an Audi A1, drove off.

Mr Magalhaes escaped the crash with no injuries, but his wife injured her ribs.

He added: “I was very angry and ran after the driver when we stopped skidding.

“We had lots of people come over and help us and they told me he had run away.

“I don’t know how he ran off as I thought they would have been dead, that’s how bad it was.

“In more than 15 years of driving both of us have never had a crash and for our first one to be such a big one, was really terrifying.

“We were very lucky to survive. My wife doesn’t feel safe driving right now.”

The 34-year-old added: “There was some congestion in front at the time, so it could have been more serious.

“It could have been 10 or 20 people injured or dead.”

Police spokesman Lucy Hurdle confirmed police were called to the collision and it was understood the driver of one of the cars left the scene.

She added: “Inquiries remain ongoing.”
