Traffic is moving slowly on the M20 west bound between junctions 2 and 1 near the Brands Hatch Circuit and Wrotham.
One lane of three is now closed towards the M25 at the Swanley interchange.
Highways England has reported the incident as an accident involving at least one vehicle which has now left the carriageway.
There is congestion on the A20 London Road but the authority says this is expected to clear before 5.30pm.
Traffic officers remain at the scene.
